Our process
How we rank these plans.
Rankings are based on true cost at your usage level, not the advertised rate. Most providers calculate their headline rate at 2,000 kWh — but the average Texas home uses 1,000–1,200 kWh, which changes the math significantly.
We factor in base charges, delivery fees, TDU pass-through charges, and usage-tier pricing to calculate what you'll actually pay each month. Plans are then scored on rate competitiveness, contract flexibility, renewable content, and verified customer satisfaction.
ChooseMyPower is editorially independent. We earn a flat referral fee from every retail electricity provider when you enroll through our partner ComparePower.com. The fee is the same across providers — so we have no reason to favor one plan over another.
Your path to savings
Use your power to choose in 3 steps.
Tell us your situation, see the real cost at your usage, and switch in 90 seconds.
Your ZIP, your usage, your situation.
Enter your ZIP code or city, then tell us if you're moving, renewing, or just shopping. We use that to filter out plans that wouldn't make sense for you — like 36-month contracts when you're on a 6-month lease.
The number on screen is the number on your bill.
Plans are ranked by total cost at your usage — not the 2,000 kWh teaser rate. We pull TDU delivery charges, base fees, bill credits, and usage-tier pricing into a single honest monthly estimate.
Pick, click, switch — no service interruption.
Enrollment hands off to ComparePower.com. The TDU still delivers your power; you're just choosing who bills you and at what rate. Most switches process in 1–3 business days.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
Common questions about choosing electricity in Texas.
How does electricity deregulation work in Texas? +
Texas deregulated its electricity market in 2002, which lets most Texans choose their retail electricity provider. Your local utility (TDU) still delivers the power — you're just choosing who bills you and at what rate. Competition typically results in lower prices and more plan options.
What's the difference between fixed and variable rate plans? +
Fixed-rate plans lock in your per-kWh price for the contract term (usually 6–36 months), protecting you from market swings. Variable-rate plans can change monthly with wholesale prices — flexible, but less predictable. For most households, a 12-month fixed plan offers the best balance.
Why is my actual bill higher than the advertised rate? +
Advertised rates are often calculated at 2,000 kWh usage, which includes volume discounts that lower the per-kWh cost. Most Texas homes use 1,000–1,200 kWh, so the effective rate is higher. We calculate true cost at your actual usage so the comparison is honest.
Can I switch providers without losing power? +
Yes. Switching is seamless — there's no interruption to your service. Your local TDU continues delivering electricity regardless of which retail provider you pick. The switch usually takes 1–3 business days to process.
What happens when my contract expires? +
When your contract ends, most providers automatically move you to a month-to-month holdover rate, which is almost always significantly higher. Shop for a new plan 30–60 days before your contract expires to lock in the best available rate.
