Reliant Energy Overview

Reliant Energy is one of Houston’s homegrown electricity providers, now owned by NRG Energy. They’re the second-largest REP in Texas and heavily marketed, especially in the CenterPoint (Houston) territory where they have their deepest roots.

Plan Options

Reliant offers a broad range of plans:

  • Fixed-rate plans — Standard locked-in rate for a set term. Many include bill credits if you hit certain usage thresholds (typically 1,000 or 2,000 kWh).
  • Truly Free Weekends / Nights — Free electricity during specific periods. Same caveat as all time-of-use plans: the “free” hours are subsidized by higher rates during peak times.
  • Variable-rate plans — Month-to-month, no contract. Rates fluctuate.
  • Reliant Rewards plans — Earn points redeemable for gift cards, bill credits, or experiences. The rewards add modest value but shouldn’t be the main reason you pick a plan.

What to Watch For

Reliant’s pricing strategy relies heavily on bill credits that kick in at specific usage levels. A plan might advertise 10.5 cents/kWh, but that rate assumes you use exactly 2,000 kWh and qualify for the $50 bill credit. If your home uses 1,200 kWh, you don’t get the credit — and your effective rate jumps significantly.

Always look at what the plan costs at your actual monthly consumption, not at the usage level where the credits make the math look best.

Service Territory

Reliant serves all major TDU territories in Texas but is especially strong in the Houston/CenterPoint area where they have the largest market share.
